Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”…
…And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Frankincense and myrrh are resins made from the sap of the boswellia and commiphora trees, respectively. These trees are common around Somalia and Oman was also a great source of frankincense. These resins are burnt as incense. Gold has been a valuable material for many years because of the fact it does not rust and is soft enough to mould into decorative shapes. These would have been exceptionally valuable gifts in Jesus’ time. However, they are now available online as thoughtful, and reasonably priced, Christmas presents.
Frankincense, gold and myrrh make good presents for people with new homes as the incense can be coupled with an oil burner to make a homely gift.
Available online through Gobaz, these small pots of scent are suitable for use with an oil burner. They come in a small gold-coloured gift box.
